Protests and suspected arson reported at immigration detention centre in Perth

On 3 September, dozens of detainees staged a violent protest at an immigration detention centre in Yongah Hill, Perth. While no injuries were reported, protesters reportedly set fire to several of the detention centres buildings. The protest was prompted by a detainee’ s attempted suicide. No further details have been released.
MYANMAR

Activists protest detention of journalists in Yangon

On 1 September, dozens of free speech activists staged a march through central Yangon to demand that the authorities release two journalists, who were on trial for allegedly possessing documents linked to state secrets. No violence was reported; however, the march resulted in localised traffic and commercial disruptions. The journalists were detained in December 2017 after reporting on an alleged massacre at an ethnic Rohingya village during the military offensive against separatist insurgents in Rakhine State. The two journalists were convicted on 3 September. The incident raises concerns about press freedom in Myanmar and increases the likelihood of further protests in the coming months.
MYANMAR

Skirmishes between military and separatist groups reported in Shan State

On 1 September, local media reported that multiple skirmishes between the Myanmar military, locally known as the Tatmadaw, and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) occurred near Muse Township, Shan State, in the preceding days. The number of casualties has not been confirmed; however, the skirmishes formed part of a broader Tatmadaw offensive against KIA positions in the region. There is consequently a high likelihood of further skirmishes in the coming days.
NEW ZEALAND

Hundreds protest against South African land reforms in Auckland

On 2 September, hundreds of predominantly South African expatriates participated in a protest march in downtown Auckland in opposition to South Africa’s planned land reforms policy. The planned reforms will allow the South African authorities to expropriate land without compensation for the purposes of land redistribution. However, the protesters in New Zealand allege that the South African government’s policy is a form of discrimination against the white, predominantly Afrikaans-speaking minority. While no violence was associated with the march, the large number of participants caused localised commuter delays.
PHILIPPINES

One killed, 15 injured, in bombing in Sultan Kudarat Province

On 2 September, one person was killed, and a further 15 injured, in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat Province. The IED was reportedly detonated near a local internet café. While no groups have claimed responsibility for the attack, authorities suspect the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) militant group was responsible. There is a high likelihood of further BIFF attacks on the coming weeks as ongoing military operations have put significant pressure on the group.
PHILIPPINES

Six killed during kidnapping in Zamboanga del Norte Province

On 1 September, unidentified assailants shot and killed six people during a kidnapping targeting a local official in Sirawai, Zamboanga del Norte Province. The official and his wife were successfully abducted. The assailants shot two of the official’s bodyguards, and a further four civilians were killed in the crossfire. The suspects fled the scene on motorised boats. No ransom demands have been issued and security operations to rescue the victims are ongoing.
THAILAND

Residents stage protest against waste-to-energy power plant in Nakhon Sawan Province

On 3 September, over 1,000 local residents participated in a protest march in opposition to the planned construction of a waste-to-energy power plant in the Nong Bua district, the capital of Nakhon Sawan Province. Protesters oppose the power plant due to its allegedly detrimental impact on the local environment. A spokesperson announced that protesters will stage further protests in Bangkok unless the local authorities cancel the project.
VIETNAM

Police arrest seven people on terrorism related charges

On 3 September, Vietnamese authorities announced the arrest of seven people on terrorism related charges. Local media sources have not confirmed where the arrests took place; however, the seven are accused of planning improvised explosive device (IED) attacks on police stations and the private residences of senior Communist Party officials in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The suspects are allegedly linked to Trieu Dai Viet, the Canada-wing of the California-based Provisional National Government of Vietnam, an organisation set up by South Vietnamese exiles following the 1955-1975 Vietnam War.

GERMANY

Further protest action by far-right group and counter-demonstrators in Chemnitz

On 1 September, further protest action took place by both anti-fascist and far-right supporters, following the death of a German national during a fight with a Syrian and Iraqi national in the city. According to reports, 8,000 far-right protesters, led by the Alternative für Deutschland (Alternative for Germany, AfD) gathered near the Karl Marx monument in Chemnitz, Saxony state. Approximately 3,000 counter-protesters also gathered nearby. More than 1,200 police officers were deployed to prevent the groups from engaging in violent confrontations, and forced both protests to end after they had exceeded their allotted time limit, and due to the increased likelihood of altercations breaking out.
NETHERLANDS

Stabbing attack leaves two injured in Amsterdam

On 31 August, a 19-year-old Afghan national with a German residence permit stabbed and injured two US tourists at Amsterdam Centraaal station, in Amsterdam. According to reports, the attacker was shot and arrested before being taken to hospital under guard. Train services were also temporarily disrupted as a result of the incident. Authorities suspect this was an act of terrorism, however, investigations are ongoing.

COLOMBIA

Businessman and wife kidnapped, then released, in Barranquilla.

On 31 August, a local businessman and his wife were kidnapped in northern Baranquilla’s La Colina Campestre zone. The woman was released several hours later and her husband was released on 1 August, after a special police force operation closed off city exits. According to the victims, the kidnapping was perpetrated by men wearing police uniforms at a police stop, however, it is likely the perpetrators were criminals posing as police officers, and not actual security personnel.
COLOMBIA

Political leader kidnapped in Cauca near Jamundí

On 1 September at 13h30 local time, an unspecified number of assailants invaded the rural property of a local Cauca politician, near the town of Jamundí. The assailants bound the household staff and kidnapped Hurtado, who is the brother of the current health secretary of the town, in his own truck. The mayoralty of the town has condemned the incident and has called for proof of life. Local authorities have offered a COP 20 million (approximately USD 6,500) reward for information relating to the case.
MEXICO

Authorities disperse protest against mining company in Guazapares, Chihuahua

On 1 September, local authorities deployed riot police to disperse a protest by residents in the Guazapares Municipality, Chihuahua State. Residents were reportedly protesting against the operations of a Canadian mining company in the region. Two protesters were arrested and police fired warning shots into the air to disperse protesters; however, no injuries were reported.
